What is BIMSTEC, and Why is BIMSTEC Important for Ranong Port?

🚢 The Port Authority of Thailand invites you to discover BIMSTEC — one of the regional cooperation frameworks attracting significant attention today, especially in Thailand’s maritime transport sector. This cooperation has opened new routes linking Ranong Port to the BIMSTEC network as Thailand’s gateway to the Andaman Sea, positioning it to become a Gateway Port connecting the Bay of Bengal with Southeast and South Asia. This marks the beginning of new opportunities across a regional trade route the world is watching closely

.

🔹 What is BIMSTEC?

BIMSTEC, or the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, is a regional cooperation framework comprising seven member countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. Together, they represent a population of over 1.8 billion people and a combined GDP of more than USD 4.5 trillion. The strength of BIMSTEC lies in its ability to connect South Asia and Southeast Asia through the strategically vital Bay of Bengal. The organisation promotes cooperation across seven priority areas — trade, investment, agriculture, security, science, technology, and connectivity — to drive the region towards becoming a strong and dynamic economic centre.

.

🔹 Why is BIMSTEC important for Ranong Port?

As a founding member of BIMSTEC, Thailand plays a significant role in promoting economic and logistics connectivity — particularly in maritime transport through the Andaman Sea. Ranong Port is a key strategic point in this network. For example, the Multimodal Transport Project links Southern China through Laos into Thailand and extends further to BIMSTEC member countries such as Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India. This positions Ranong Port as a new cross-border logistics corridor, effectively reducing both transit time and transport costs.

.

🔹 Ranong Port — A Prominent Gateway Port for BIMSTEC

Ranong Port is the only state-owned port on Thailand’s Andaman coast, strategically located to connect directly with the countries surrounding the Bay of Bengal. It also lies close to the proposed Land Bridge project, a major national initiative to transform Thailand into a regional logistics hub. Ranong Port is capable of efficiently handling medium-sized vessels (50–120 containers) and serves as a sandbox area for multimodal logistics — integrating road, rail, and maritime systems, alongside the development of advanced digital and customs systems. These developments lay the foundation for future expansion of maritime routes to Bangladesh and India.

.

🚢 For these reasons, Ranong Port has become an essential component of Thailand’s strategy to connect the region in practical and meaningful ways. With its ability to shorten transport time, reduce costs, and unlock new trade opportunities, Ranong Port is well positioned to fulfil its role as a Gateway Port — opening the door to BIMSTEC’s future and supporting sustainable, long-term regional economic growth 🌏
