Introducing a New Gateway Port Partnership to BIMSTEC — ‘Ranong Port 🤝 Chittagong Port’

The collaboration between Thailand’s Ranong Port and Chittagong Port (Chattogram) of Bangladesh under the BIMSTEC cooperation framework has emerged as a strategic development to watch in the regional logistics landscape. Pairing these two key ports not only strengthens trade connectivity between Southeast Asia and South Asia but also reinforces Thailand’s role as a maritime hub on the Andaman coast. This partnership represents a golden opportunity to drive trade and integrate economic activity across the region in a systematic way. 🌏

.

🔹 Ranong Port: Thailand’s Strategic Gateway on the Andaman Coast

Ranong Port is located in a strategic position along the Andaman Sea, enabling efficient container transport that meets international standards. The port connects cargo directly to the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal without requiring passage through the Strait of Malacca, significantly reducing transport distance and time.

.

To support its role as a logistics hub, the Port Authority of Thailand has accelerated infrastructure development — including new cranes and handling equipment, upgrades to warehouses and berthing facilities — ensuring that Ranong Port is ready to accommodate future cargo growth and strengthening Thailand’s competitiveness in the region.

.

The new route between Ranong Port and Chittagong Port will enable Thai high-potential products to reach the Bangladeshi market more quickly — including agricultural products, processed foods, instant noodles, fresh and processed fruits, halal food, automotive parts, machinery, and medical tourism services, where Thailand holds technological and pricing advantages. The development of Ranong Port marks an important milestone in positioning Thailand as a maritime gateway on the Andaman Sea.

.

🔹 Chittagong Port: The Economic Heart of Bangladesh

On the Bangladesh side, Chittagong Port (Chattogram) is the largest port in the country and serves as its primary commercial hub. Located along the Karnaphuli River, the port handles up to 90% of Bangladesh’s international trade.

.

The port is a vital gateway for Bangladeshi exports entering Southeast Asian markets, particularly textiles and garments, an industry where Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest exporter; leather products and footwear; fisheries products including shrimp and frozen fish; pharmaceuticals and medical supplies; and scrap metal from the ship-breaking industry, in which Bangladesh is a global leader.

.

Connecting with Ranong Port helps reduce transport time and logistics costs from 7-15 days down to only 3-5 days, enabling Thailand and Bangladesh to expand trade, increase logistics efficiency, and strengthen BIMSTEC connectivity more rapidly.

.

🚢 The cooperation between Ranong Port and Chittagong Port represents a key mechanism for advancing Thailand’s trade towards the Indian Ocean and BIMSTEC member countries in a structured way. The pairing of these two ports is therefore a ‘golden opportunity for growth’, delivering shared benefits to all sectors — expanding markets, lowering costs, enhancing global competitiveness, and supporting Ranong Port’s rise as a Gateway Port linking Southeast Asia with South Asia in a stable and sustainable manner 💙
