The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) is taking decisive steps towards becoming a Low Carbon Port, with a firm commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting clean energy use at every stage of its operations. This initiative forms a key part of PAT’s “2D” strategy, under the pillar of “Decarbonisation”, which seeks to balance trade competitiveness with environmental conservation — ensuring that Thailand’s ports grow sustainably while remaining friendly to the planet
.
Installing Solar Panels to Boost Clean Energy Generation
One of PAT’s core decarbonisation approaches is to increase the proportion of clean energy use. PAT has begun installing solar panels across major operational areas — including warehouses, office buildings, and car parks — with plans to expand installation to the PAT Arena. This expansion will enable the generation of more than 5 million kilowatt-hours of solar power per year, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to planting over 55,000 trees. It marks a true transition for PAT towards becoming a Green Port in practice, not just in principle.
.
Electric Vehicles Powering a Pollution-Free Port
Another key measure in PAT’s carbon reduction efforts is the conversion of port vehicles and machinery from diesel to electric vehicles (EVs). This includes both heavy-duty equipment and official vehicles used in port operations. The shift to EVs helps reduce fuel costs and noise pollution within port areas, while eliminating black smoke and air contaminants. This transformation reinforces PAT’s Green Port concept — clean, efficient, and genuinely environmentally friendly.
.
Preparing for Onshore Power Supply (OPS) Systems
PAT is also studying and preparing for the implementation of an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system, which will allow berthed ships to draw electricity directly from the shore instead of running their engines during cargo loading and unloading. This significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions, air pollution, and noise generated by ship engines, thereby improving local air quality and environmental conditions around the port. This initiative also raises Thai ports to the level of internationally recognised Green Ports.
.
Every project and measure undertaken by the Port Authority of Thailand reflects its genuine commitment to becoming a Low Carbon Port in a sustainable manner. Guided by the principle “Decarbonisation: Reducing Carbon, Building a Cleaner Society, for a Better World,” PAT continues to lower its carbon footprint and affirm its role as a Green Port — driving economic growth responsibly and sustainably for the benefit of future generations
