⚠️ Safety and environmental protection are the two core pillars of port operations — especially when it comes to hazardous cargo, which must be handled strictly in accordance with international standards such as the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code and regulations issued by the Port Authority of Thailand 📋
.
🚢 The Port Authority of Thailand therefore highlights the systematic approach to hazardous cargo management within its ports — from cargo classification to user procedures. This not only reduces the risk of accidents, but also represents a key step towards becoming a Green Port — a safe, environmentally responsible, and sustainable maritime gateway 💙
.
🔹 Classification of Hazardous Cargo and Management Guidelines
The Port Authority of Thailand has established a classification system for hazardous cargo to ensure appropriate management based on the level of risk associated with each category, while also helping control pollution and reduce the likelihood of accidents, as follows:
✅Category 1: Cargo prohibited from import, export, or handling — such as explosives, infectious substances, radioactive materials, etc.
✅Category 2: Cargo permitted for alongside handling but not for storage, and must be removed from the port immediately — such as toxic gases and highly hazardous chemicals, etc.
✅Category 3: Cargo permitted for storage within designated hazardous warehouses, but for no longer than five working days — such as flammable liquids, self-combustible substances, corrosive materials, etc.
.
🔹 Procedural Requirements for Users Handling Hazardous Cargo
Operators wishing to import or export hazardous cargo must comply strictly with the procedures set by the Port Authority of Thailand, which are divided into four steps:
✅ Fully understand all hazardous cargo regulations and requirements before proceeding
✅ Submit hazardous cargo details to the Hazardous Cargo Control Division, or comply with specific requirements of each port
✅ Prepare documentation and packaging, and ensure that hazardous cargo is properly labelled according to standards and cargo type
✅ Operators, agents, or cargo owners must accept responsibility for any damage arising from failure to comply with regulations and requirements
.
🚢 The Port Authority of Thailand aims to foster a culture of safety and promote shared responsibility through effective hazardous cargo management. This reflects readiness in operational standards, environmental commitment, and personnel awareness — supporting the transition towards a Green Port that not only delivers efficient cargo handling, but also upholds safety, sustainability, and trust from all stakeholders ✨
