🚢 Three steps to strengthen ‘Ranong Port’ as the Gateway Port of the SEC 💙
.
🚢 Ranong Port is now under the spotlight as a Gateway Port — a vital trade gateway linking Thailand with neighbouring countries and advancing towards becoming a regional logistics hub under the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) policy. The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) is therefore accelerating efforts with a three-step plan to reinforce Ranong Port, transforming it into a new strategic focal point that Thailand’s transport and logistics sector cannot overlook 🏗️

🔹 Building on Opportunities from a Shifting Border
.
Due to unrest at Myanmar’s border checkpoints, many operators have shifted routes to Ranong Port since early 2024. As a result, cargo volumes passing through the port have surged by more than 200 percent for both imports and exports — particularly for the Myanmar market, which continues to demand goods from Thailand. This presents a valuable opportunity to elevate Ranong Port from being merely an ‘alternative’ route to becoming the ‘main’ channel for border trade.

🔹 Upgrading the Port on All Fronts
From a small facility that once handled vessels of only 500-12,000 deadweight tonnes, ‘Ranong Port’ is now undergoing a major transformation. Developments include new infrastructure, expanded cargo storage areas, and the capacity to handle over 800 TEUs of containerised cargo. In addition, international collaboration with ‘Chittagong Port’ in Bangladesh is opening new trade routes and strengthening regional connectivity. This not only raises ‘Ranong Port’ to international standards but also positions it to become one of the world’s significant ports in the future.

🔹 Linking the SEC Strategy and the BIMSTEC Market
Ranong is not developing in isolation — it is also connected to the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) policy, designed to make southern Thailand a key economic gateway for ASEAN. This corridor not only shortens transport routes by bypassing the Strait of Malacca but also reduces logistics costs and boosts competitiveness for Thai businesses. As such, ‘Ranong Port’ plays a pivotal role as the starting point in building a new trade network linking Thailand with BIMSTEC, ASEAN, and global markets more efficiently.
